Design Technology

At Snaresbrook Primary School, Design Technology is an integral part of the curriculum. We have designed a curriculum that allows children to be creative, inventive and to explore and create based on the world around them. Our teachers encourage children to learn in an iterative manner; constantly questioning, changing and refining their ideas on the route to their final product. Children are encouraged to take risks, knowing that products are not created perfectly on the first attempt. We give children opportunities to design, make and evaluate products with a purpose, for somebody in the community to use. The children will understand the need for a healthy diet and where produce comes from by planning and cooking both savoury and sweet dishes; linking to our school’s edible playground when possible. Throughout the school Design Technology (DT) is taught in a fun and engaging way, with strong links made to other subjects such as Science, Maths and Computing

how is design technology implemented?


Design Technology (DT) is a crucial part of school life and learning and it is for this reason that as a school we are dedicated to the teaching and delivery of a high-quality Design Technology curriculum. This is implemented through:

• A well thought-out, whole school, yearly overview of the DT curriculum which allows for progression across year groups in all areas of DT (textiles, mechanisms, structures, food and electrical systems)

• Well-planned and resourced projects, providing children with a hands-on and enriching experience

• A range of skills being taught, ensuring that children are aware of health and safety issues related to the tasks undertaken

• Each project from Year 1 to Year 6 addressing the principles of designing, making, and evaluating and incorporating relevant technical knowledge and understanding in relevant contexts.

As a school, we promote Design Technology through our edible playground and outdoor and woodland learning. The children learn about where our food comes from by growing a variety of fruit and vegetables, and make links to the importance of a balanced, healthy and varied diet and how to prepare the food they grow.

At Snaresbrook Primary School we aim for all our pupils to be able to research, design, and develop skills to make products that are fit for purpose.  We aim for pupils to learn and apply skills across different areas of Design Technology including cooking, sewing and woodwork.  Our lessons are planned carefully and delivered to ensure that every child progresses across the individual year as well as across their primary school life.

Places to visit to support Design Technology


There are lots of ways to support your child with Design Technology. One way is through junk modelling - it is amazing what children can turn a very simple cardboard box into.

There are also lots of museums or galleries to visit. Many are free- however, there may be a small fee for entry or specific exhibitions so please check first.

Our Design Technology Projects


Every year group does 3 projects across the year, where they design, make and evaluate a product. This involves sewing, joining, cooking and using a range of equipment e.g. junior hacksaws, needles, drills. 

Year 2 Bird Boxes


Year 2 had a very exciting day taking part in a Design & Technology day where they created their own animal habitats.

The children had already planned their animal habitats and then alongside HeppDT they used the different tools and equipment to make their habitats.

DT Staff Training


All the teachers took part in a Design & Technology staff meeting where they used a range of tools and equipment to create a motorised buggy.
