Geography

At Snaresbrook Primary School, by providing a positive, caring environment, we support every child in developing their understanding of our world and its people, and aim to inspire a sense of responsibility for the environment in which we live.  We provide the opportunity for children to develop a growing knowledge about the world, which helps to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes.

At Snaresbrook Primary School, we are committed to providing every child with learning opportunities to engage in Geography and believe it to be an essential subject in the curriculum.

How is Geography implemented?


At Snaresbrook Primary School, Geography is taught alongside other curriculum areas to create a 'connected' curriculum. The teaching of Geography at our school is about developing an understanding of our environment and world through experience and investigation, as well as research.  Our aim is to support the children’s understanding of the world in which we live.  This allows the children to take responsibility for the world which they are part of, and enables every child to contribute to improving the environment and our planet. 

We use the surrounding area to support children's understanding through local walks, visits into London and residentials where map reading, orienteering and geography skills are put into practise.

Every child at Snaresbrook Primary School engages in quality Geography education from their entry into Nursery until the end of Key Stage 2 in Year 6.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENRICHED GEOGRAPHY LEARNING


We are always looking for opportunities to further develop the children's understanding in Geography by organising trips, visitors and workshops. Please see below for an outline of some of the enriching experiences that we have taken part in. 

Year 5 Residential Gilwell


It only seems like yesterday that we were leaving school for our Year 6 school journey to Gilwell Park. After a whirlwind week, the children have returned - energised, braver and ready to face anything! 

A lot of the activities involved climbing up very high poles and balancing on or jumping off them. The adults were all incredibly impressed with how quickly some of the children leapt into these challenges with little or no fear. What was even more astonishing was the children who faltered, thought about giving up then kept on going anyway.

Apart from the day time adventures, the children enjoyed the delicious, filling food that fuelled their days and the night time activities such as a night hike and a campfire.

Year 5 Epping Forest field Centre


Year 5 went on a school trip to Epping Forest. We explored the forest and studied the rivers (width, depth and speed). At the site, we saw and felt clay that can be found deep in the ground under the soil. It was a brilliant day - we all loved it !

Houses of Parliament Trip


The School Council were lucky enough to visit the Houses of Parliament. They were met in Westminster Hall by the M.P for Leyton and Wanstead, John Cryer. John Cryer gave them a fantastic tour of the House of Lords and House of Commons. They were able to  stand at the dispatch box, look at the Speaker’s Chair, and were told some really interesting information about the various aspects of the commons and even stood where the Prime Minister stands. After that they had our lunch in one of the many committee rooms; which overlooked the River Thames. 

Year 4 Orienteering


For our Outdoor and Woodland Learning lessons we are focusing on mapping and orienteering.We looked at compasses and learned how to align the needle to north. We identified the different compass points. We then studied aerial maps of the local area and our school. For our challenge we went outside and using the map and compass, we followed an orienteering course, locating various markers around the school grounds. When we located each marker, we took a photo on the ipad and then went to find the next one. We had 5/10 different  markers to find altogether. It was a really exciting challenge!
